Past tenses and their different forms are similar to present tenses. The biggest difference is past tense forms record actions that happened in the past whereas the present tenses record actions that are happening at the time. The Past Simple form of the past tense is used to record actions that happened at a definite time in the past. The past continuous form records actions that happened in the past but were interrupted by another action. For example, I had a nightmare when sleeping last Monday. In this sentence having a nightmare interrupted the sleeping. The past perfect form records actions that happened in the past and the order in which they happened. For example, The groom kissed his bride after he had removed her veil. In this example the groom removed the veil first then kissed his bride. The past perfect continuous form records actions that had been happening continuously in the past until another action happened. For example, Peter had been attending the seminary before he joined the army. In the example Peter was attending the seminary then after that he joined the army. In conclusion all the different past tense forms record actions that happened in the past but the way each of them is used is distinct.
