This unit covered the four present tenses. First is Present Simple (I run), used for habitual actions, permanent situations and facts, commentaries, directions or instructions, newspaper headlines, historical sequences, and present tense stories. Next is Present Continuous (I am running), used for actions in progress at or around the moment of speaking, as well as to emphasize frequent actions or refer to regular actions, to describe developing situations, and to present background events in a present tense story. Present Perfect (I have run) relates past actions to a present state. It can describe completed past actions or actions that began in the past and are continued in the present (I.e. I've lived here for ten years). Present Perfect Continuous (I have been running) describes completed or ongoing activities with a length of time attached (I have been living here for ten years) or recently finished actions with present results (I've been running, so I am sweaty). Despite all being present tense, these each carry different meanings and have different nuances.
