This unit is about teaching receptive skills (reading and listening). It explains that we can divide the reasons and motives for reading and listening into two categories (for a purpose and for entertainment). For example, we listen to a football commentary on the radio for entertainment and look at the stock market reports for a purpose (to see how your shares are performing). I have learned about how we read and listen and the skills readers and listeners employ to gain true understanding. An example would be to use predictive skills (predicting the content from a headline or introduction) or to only read specific information (scanning). Potential problems which may occur while teaching receptive skills to learners of English are often the length of a word or sentence and the use of unfamiliar words. Good ways of approaching language difficulty are to pre-teach vocabulary, the careful selection of texts (using a variety of authentic and non-authentic texts) and to create interest ('engage' phase activities: showing pictures, predicting what the text will be about).
