This unit focused on the past tenses. The past simple is used for past actions when a time is given, when the time is in question, or when the action occurred at a specific yet unmentioned time. There are numerous irregular verbs in the past simple, and students often get these confused and misuse them. The past continuous is used for past actions which were interrupted, gradual developments which occurred, and for actions that began before the time mentioned but which likely continued after. Students often leave out the verb ?to be,? or forget to include or misuse -ing. The past perfect is used to describe a past event which occurred before a different past event. The past perfect continuous is used to describe actions which continued until a specific moment in the past which is being discussed. Students often leave out the auxiliary verbs ?had? and ?been.? In this unit, I learned about common mistakes that students make when using each of the past tenses, as well as several different activities to use in order to practice each tense.
