In unit 10, I learnt the difference between accuracy and fluency activities, accuracy activities are usually part of the study phase and are more focused on producing correct language while fluency activities are usually apart of the activate stage and are much more focused on allowing students to experiment and be creative with the language. Both activities are equally important. There are several speaking activities that can be used in the classroom, these includes, ?Controlled Activities? which are activities based on accuracy and the language is controlled by the teacher. These activities include drilling which may include constant repetition and prompting which may include pre-planned answers and questions. ?Creative Communication?, these are fluency based activities and may include but not limited to discussions, debates and free role-plays activities. Speaking activities in the classroom may also include guided activities, these activities are also controlled by the teacher, these may include model dialogues or guided role-plays. When learning a new language many students are reluctant to verbally express themselves in the classroom, therefore it is up to the teachers to encourage and create a comfortable atmosphere for the students to encourage participation and interest in the class. Teachers can encourage interaction in class by assigning group-work and pair-work, teachers can also change the classroom dynamics and make speaking roles more purposeful. There are certain guidelines to consider for a free or creative speaking activity, before each lesson, teachers should prepare all necessary materials, work out instructions and try to predict what the students will bring to the activity and try to work out any problems they might have. During the activity teachers should ensure that students know the aim of the activity, make sure students have enough time for each activity and monitor and assess these activities to provide feedback afterward. After the activity, teachers can provide feedback for each of the students and comment on how well they did but be careful how you approach their errors because you don?t want to discourage them also comment on what they can do to improve. When it come on to writing skills teachers should always encourage students to improve the skill if they are not good at it. One of the best ways to teach students how to spell is by intensive reading. Many people may find spelling difficult because many words are pronounced the same way and spelt differently and some words are spelt the same way but pronounced differently. Creative writing should be encouraged in the classroom as it encourages students and gives them a sense of pride when it is completed.
