This unit discussed materials for class. In my own experience studying foreign languages as a child, the textbook was a spine, but not the meat of class. In Japan, textbook is god, that has always been frustrating for me. There is little flexibility in which book is used. Perhaps more infuriating, standardized tests students take to enter high schools and universities, will be heavily based on the textbook. If the textbook is printed with a mistake, and you teach the correct version to the students, and they answer a standardized test question with your answer, not the one printed in the textbook, they will be marked wrong. Your students can be penalized for you teaching them correct English. Overall, most Japanese EFL learners are at much lower levels than one would expect considering the number of years they have studied English. I have very rarely been able to use original materials. While students are very interested in real stories and books or movies enjoyed by English speakers, I have almost always had students with English levels so low that authentic materials were too difficult and would discourage the student. When my schools permit me to supplement the coursebook, I will try to design role plays that direct my students to manipulating the textbook English towards more natural conversation.
