Test and evaluations are used primarily to assess students' level of language and what progress they're making. Unit 15 examines the internal and external tests used for these purposes. Periodically, teachers may want to know what their students have already learned and what do they think about the course work. To ascertain this information, teachers may use tutorials, evaluations and various tests. Some tests that teachers use to assess students are placement, diagnostic, progress, practice and proficiency. Placement test are usually given at the beginning of a course to determine the student's level. Diagnostic test assess the current knowledge of the students. Progress test can be given at any time throughout the course. Practice tests are aimed at helping students with external tests. Two popular external tests are the TOEFL and the TOEIC. The TOEFL exam is an American test required by some universities. The TOEIC is a business exam geared for the workplace, most common in Japan and Korea. Then, there are also the Cambridge Assessments which is a suite of exams which test for general English. All testing is of utmost importance for both the teacher and student as they provide knowledge on how well a subject may or may not be being taught and how well it is absorbed or retained by the student.
