Unit 18 covered Modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. It was a lot of information to comprehend but I think I got there in the end. Modal auxiliary verbs are important for expressing differing degrees of formality, and also expressing ideas such as obligation, ability, and probability. I think modal auxiliary verbs can be quite difficult for learners of English as a second language as they can contain a few differnt meanings. Also, some of them are very similar in their meaning but have subtle differences which even I as a native speaker struggle with. A relative clause is a dependent clause that modifies a noun. There are two kinds of relative clauses, a defining relative clause gives essential information to the meaning of the sentence, whereas a non-defining relative clause does not give essential information to the meaning of the sentence. Therefore, if the non-defining relative clause is left out, the meaning of the sentence does not change. Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs which contain particles (propositions or adverbs or both). There are so many of them and they can act differently (be separated or inseparable) which can make it quite difficult for students to learn. A good way to learn them can be by choosing a particular subject and learning the phrasal verbs associated with that subject.
