This unit covers receptive skills, viz., reading and listening. It discusses motives a student may have for listening, how we read and listen, problems we may encounter when reading and listening, and how best to assist students in developing reading and listening skills. One's background and context may greatly influence how he/ she interprets what is read. For example, if a student is from the US, he or she will be more likely to understand that the Red Socks is a baseball team rather than a pair of red socks. Problems can emerge when students who are learning to read and listen. One way to avoid problems is to find material which is suitable to the level and preferences of the students. Another way is to make sure the vocabulary they will encounter in the material is pre-taught.
