The various types of assessments each have something to offer both the student and the teacher. It is as important for the teacher to have a general idea of the fluency and progress of the student as it is for the student to have a tangible idea of their progress and English speaking/reading/writing/listening ability. To be an effective teacher, one must be able to use the right types of evaluation to reach the right end goals, so their students can remain motivated throughout the course and feel that they are not just learning English for the sake of learning, but are working towards a goal. Thus, knowing when to use a tutorial, test, or evaluation by the student is vital, and thus the value of assessments such as placement and diagnostic tests, I feel, is of the utmost importance.
