This unit deals with evaluation and testing. I agree that it is important for the students to have some feedback to evaluate their own level and progress. There are a number of ways to assess a student's language level such as tutorials, evaluations by the students and more formal ways such as tests. Tests are given at different stages during a course. At the start the students may be given a placement test to assist the formation of groups or a diagnostic test to tell you what they do and don't know. Teachers often give a periodic progress test on the work covered. I find it useful that this can happen every week, month, term, or after a certain amount of the course book has been covered. An achievement test is usually a test given at the end of a course e.g. at the end of the school year. Other options include external examinations, offered by organizations such as Cambridge Assessment, and proficiency tests, which claim to measure proficiency in English at particular levels. A practice test is another kind of tests that follow the format and the structure of the external examination that they are being given in preparation for. Some examples of external examinations: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge exams. I hope that this information about evaluation and testing will help me with my future courses as a teacher.
