Unit 15 discusses the different ways students' levels and progress students are evaluated, and some of the common external exams teachers may need to prepare students for. To this end, unit 15 discussed three formal means of evaluating students to include (1) tutorials, i.e., can take place with the whole group or individual students, (2) allow students to evaluate the course, and (3) evaluations by tests at different stages in a course. For example, students are given placement tests designed to enable teachers to place new students into the correct class according to their language ability. Diagnostic tests, on the other hand, are given at the start of the course to see what students already know. Formal written progress tests are used to gauge language covered, remembered, acquired or forgotten which should include a balance of reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary. Practice tests are given in preparation for external examinations which are not course related but designed to measure proficiency in English at levels. Unit 15 also discusses external tests to include: (1) TOEFL ? Test of English as a foreign language, IELTS - International English Language Testing System, TOEIC - the Test of English for International Communication, and a battery of Cambridge Assessments.
