Course materials are an invaluable tool. However, they cannot do all of the work for the teacher. Their benefits usually include providing lessons that steadily increase in difficulty while reviewing past lessons. Course books can be a good way of making sure that there aren't any glaring weaknesses or gaps in our students' learning. There are a few drawbacks, though. The constant march through a textbook can lead some students to feeling bored and the lessons can become predictable. It's also nice to try to supplement or replace some of the book's material with something you create to provide interest. Students can usually relate more to material if they feel you have invested something in it. I remember in the video from Unit 10 that compared good and bad teaching, there was a picture that the teacher drew that he called a \"Steven-saurus\" (I think). When the students in the class saw his picture, many of them smiled, because it was a humorous creature and something silly that the teacher had created for them. I think our students can feel these sorts of things, and are usually appreciative when they see the effort a teacher puts forth for them. So, it's important to not go on auto-pilot with textbooks. Part of a teacher's job is to tailor their class and materials to best meet the needs of their students.
