Unit 10 involved watching two contrasting video lessons. The teacher and students in both lessons were the same, but there were obvious differences between the two, mainly that the second lesson was much more successful than the first. In the first lesson the teacher seemed irritated and impatient. He did not smile. The students remained silent and avoided eye contact with him. The teacher forced the students to participate. He also used a lot of jargon and complex grammar explanations which confused the students. While the students worked on their own, the teacher read a book rather than monitor their progress. The second lesson began with the teacher smiling and learning the student's names. The 'engage' stage involved elicitation of animal names. It was simple enough that the students willingly joined in and looked visibly relaxed and happy. The teacher spoke more slowly and clearly and simplified his explanations while using gestures and realia. While students worked on their own, he watched over them. While the video lessons did seem exaggerated in my opinion, they were nevertheless useful to spot key differences between an effective lesson and one that needs more work. What stood out to me in particular is that the teacher's attitude really sets the mood for the entire class so it's best to be positive!
