The unit covered receptive skills, or skills that involved receiving information via language. The two receptive skills are reading and listening. With both receptive skills, the student's ability to extrapolate information is based on several more specific receptive skills: predicting content based on preview/headline, deducing meaning from context, scanning for information, skimming for information, and reading closely for detailed information. I had never compared the different ways in which we read, so I found this information particularly interesting. Each type of perception is unique, but they all happen in conjuncture to allow the language user to understand information. The unit also discussed the the problems students have with receptive skills and provides techniques to combat them. Before the perception activity, student may not know key vocabulary. This is important to teach before it's a problem. I found the section on OVER-preparing students particularly interesting. While understanding everything is great, it is also important to develop the other more specific perception skills (ei deducing information from context.) Another valuable technique for preventing problem is carefully selecting materials based on the student's language level and how likely the topic is to motivate/engage the learner.
