In this unit strategies for teaching productive skills, speaking and writing, are addressed. The teacher must create the need and the desire for the students to communicate for an effective lesson. The unit discusses the difference between fluency (in the activate phase wherein students can experiment and be creative with language) and accuracy (usually in the study phases (wherein the emphasis is is put on producing correct language.) Both carry equal importance. In the classroom there are three different kinds of speaking activities: controlled, guided and creative activities. The unit details reasons why students may be reluctant to speak and provides techniques to encourage interaction as well as a typical free/creative speaking activity lesson. Guideline include preparation for before the lesson, during the activity and feedback for after the activity. In teaching writing skills issues such as handwriting, spelling and layout need to be considered as English can differ significantly from many languages in these aspects/ Furthermore, creative writing should be encouraged as it engages the students. The unit then details a typical ESA lesson in writing. The unit also suggests games that can be used including those in resource books and those which are familiar to many and can be incorporated into our classrooms.
