ENGLISH IS NOT A PHONETIC LANGUAGE AND THIS IMPLIES THAT PRONUNCIATION IS DIFFERENT FROM SPELLING. SO THAT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO STUDY PHONOLOGY. IN THIS LESSON WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT THE INTONATION AS THE VARIATION IN VOLUME AND PITCH IN A WHOLE SENTENCE VERSUS STRESS WHICH IS MORE CONCERNED WITH INDIVIDUAL WORDS. THE NORMAL PATTERN FOR INTONATION IS RICE/FALL; THE SECOND ONE IS FALL/RICE AND THE LAST ONE IS FLAT INTONATION. THERE ARE SEVERAL RULES ABOUT STRESS SUCH US DIFFERENT METHODOLOGIES TO TEACH AND INDICATE STRESS. WHILE PRONOUNCING, THE SOUNDS CAN BE DROPPED, LINKED, CHANGED OR WORDS CAN BE EXTRA LETTERED. IN ORDER TO HELP STUDENTS LEARNING CORRECT PRONUNCIATION, IT IS VERY USEFUL THE INTERNATIONAL PHONEMIC ALPHABET. FIRST OF ALL WE HAVE TO DISTINGUISH VOICED AND UNVOICED CONSONANTS (THE DIFFERENCE DEPENDS IF WE USE OR NOT VOCAL CORDS. ABOUT VOWELS WE HAVE TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN PURE VOWELS FROM DIPHTHONG. WE HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED ALSO TO THE PLACE ARTICULATION (VELAR, ALVEOLAR, PALATAL, DENTAL, LABIO DENTAL, BILABIAL AND GLOTTAL SOUNDS) AND TO THE MANNER OF ARTICULATION (PLOSIVE, AFFRICATE, FRICATIVES, LATERAL, NASAL AND APPROXIMANT). AMONG THE DIFFERENT METHODOLOGIES TO TEACH STUDENTS HOW TO PRONOUNCE CORRECTLY ENGLISH SOUNDS WE CAN REMEMBER TONGUE TWISTER, PHONEMES,VISUALS, TEACHER'S OWN MOUTH AND PEER DICTATION.
