I left university 12 years ago and since then Ive been fortunate enough to do quite a bit of travelling in that time. Ive met lots of people whilst travelling who have completed a TEFL course and taught in various countries with amazing stories to tell of their experiences. My opinion of TEFL over these years was that it was something that graduates or people in their early twenties did, so I was a little hesitant when at 34, I signed up to do the course. I used to wonder, exactly how do you teach english to people when you yourself might not speak the same language as the people you are teaching, you might not even use the same alphabet? So now, after weeks and weeks of reading, writing, watching the video, and researching on line, I get it! Ive discovered the secret if you like. What I mean is, now Ive got to the end of the course and understood most of it, the systems and techniques TEFL teaches, in particular ESA teaching, are brilliant! Its really quite simple, get the students interested in something, in an interesting/stimulating way, relate it logically to exactly what you are trying to teach (the serious bit) and then, hopefully, when you think theyve got it, let them go for it and practicing freely what theyve just learnt. I think, a really simple but really effective way of teaching. I did what you told me not to do when I received the DVD and I watched it. Ignoring what the teacher was actually talking about, I remember thinking, No way, Im never going to be able to do that. I meant just simply standing in front of a group of people with them all staring at me, expecting me to somehow teach them something. Then, when I actually got to Unit 10 and played the DVD again, my feelings were much different. This time taking on board what the teacher (during the correct lesson example) was actually saying, how he was saying it, how he was interacting with the students the different techniques and props he used, I thought, Yeah, I think I can do this.
