Prior to the course, I worked for over a year in China with young learners at a private school. While I had a good experience there, I knew that I needed to learn more about TEFL and how to apply that to different teaching situations. This course addressed all of the possibilities: one-on-one teaching, group teaching, monolingual/multilingual classes, business english, young learners, and teaching general english to adults. I now feel confident enough to apply for different types of teaching jobs. I learned common grammatical structures in a totally new context--it was nothing like the way I had to learn it back in my high school english class. The course materials broke everything down so that it could be easily understood and practically applied in an ESL classroom. I also learned a lot about teaching adult students, something I don't have very much hands-on experience with. The video clearly illustrated the difference between a good and bad lesson and the course materials provided plenty of activity ideas that are appropriate for working with adults. Because the materials covered so many different types of teaching situations, I feel there are many options available to me. Over the next year, I plan to apply what I have learned in the course by working with the Asian immigrant population in New Zealand. After that, teaching overseas may become the focus for me. Because of what I learned through the course, I will have better options than I did a year ago. In addition to teaching, I usually supplement my income through writing. I write a lot about working with children/preschoolers and ESL basics. What I have learned in this course has given me a stronger foundation for writing about education. I also enjoy designing educational materials and hope to continue doing that, applying what I learned in this course wherever I can.
