When I moved to England at the age of 8 years old I had no knowledge of english. In fact, I cannot remember how I learned the language and I feel I have gained two languages as one does with their own mother tongue. However, I found learning the forms of the english grammar in this course very useful as we tend to either forget or take these for granted as native speakers. I have briefly worked in crèches both in the UK and here in Northern Cyprus teaching 3 year olds english. I found walking into a classroom on the first day very daunting and remember freezing on the spot. Fortunately, my supervisor was there to rescue me and in time through her help and my research I progressed to planning and conducting very simple lessons for these children. One of the biggest difficulties I had was some (almost all) of the students were very spoilt and my supervisor was not very consistent in discipline procedures for fear of losing students. Her twins were also in my class and very attached to their mother, therefore, each time they experienced some difficulty they would throw a tantrum until their mother took over and gave in to them. On the whole though the children began to understand all my instructions, joined in most of the activities and some (including one of her twins) began forming sentences. Since then, I have also had a student on a 1-1 basis whilst doing this course which I found extremely useful in putting the techniques of this course into practice with her. Overall, I have learned and gained an enormous amount of knowledge and techniques to take with me in whichever situation I find myself. I am currently planning to move back to the UK and although I started this course to further my teaching here, I feel that I can still put it into use in the UK amongst the ethnic minorities wishing to learn english. I found the course very well structured, for example, after a difficult grammar unit followed an easier classroom technique etc. which enabled the course to go at a smooth pace. Thank you all at ITTT for your support.
