This course has reminded me of how much I take my native language for granted. It has helped me reflect on the language I speak, write, & dream in, and construct my identity around. It has forced me to deconstruct and attempt to understand grammar, punctuation, verb tenses, vocabulary, sentence order, etc and how I can/could possibly explain this to someone else, a non native speaker. There were times when I felt totally stumped by this very dilemma, realizing I don't understand the structural aspects of the english language. The course has given me a base in understanding the language & how it works. But, the course is only a beginning, a taste in this area. I believe the "test" of what I really gained from this course will come when I am in the student teaching phase - where the theoretical and the practice of teaching english to non-english speakers & the realities of what actually happens in a class intersects. I have teaching experience but in an entirely different field. I know the lesson I plan on paper does not necessarily reflect what happens in the classroom & sometimes the best laid plans need to be tossed. I know I need to over plan so I always have something to fall back on. I know I will need to reflect, revise and rethink many things that will happen in the classroom to improve my teaching practice. I have found many good sources online to help understand grammar and other structural areas and to look for ways to present certain concepts in a lesson from "sources" who have more experience than I do and then adapt them to what feels truthful to/for me. I hope to go overseas with my son. I plan on taking the next year, if possible, gaining experience in teaching ESL students in nyc where we live. I have used art making and museum objects to enhance curriculum and they are both very powerful teaching tools. I am a teaching artist/museum educator and I know the combination of ESL and the arts is unlimited, if the opportunities are there.
