For me, the course has highlighted several areas where I need to do some revision and ?over learning.? I have been astonished by how little regard I have paid to grammar items. It is only now that I have been thinking of parts of speech that I see how new learners have difficulties in coping with us native speakers! We talk so fast! We know what we mean when we speak, however, we use short cuts in our language that new learners do not understand. I need to re-evaluate my practice. I know that my knowledge of grammar is fairly competent but it is certainly not proficient! I need to follow the rules more closely! My lesson plans are usually accepted by bodies such as Ofsted and our regular reviews at school. It is though, true to say, I know what I mean, but I am not always explicit enough for others to work from my plans. This needs to be addressed. I need to check that I have planned for all learning styles and ensure they are VAK. I do try to work to the SMART targets and Lesson Objectives. If one of my students shows any kind of ?break through? towards literacy, we will usually pause to reinforce their learning. My teaching has been primarily aimed at those pupils who come into the SEN world for one reason or another. They often do not possess the analytical ability to study the formation and structure of language to the level we may ask of an additional language learner. Some of the pupils arrive with no english but they are usually involved in the Intensive Language Programme. The ILP has a ?total immersion? approach where pupils spend most of their first few weeks with a specialist teacher. They are gradually integrated to main stream. It is often the case that those pupils who really struggle with this programme will eventually come my way. EAL pupils are not SEN and equally so, SEN pupils are not EAL, though there may be some overlaps. Far more teachers need to be aware of this and I will endeavor to run some professional development in this area. My plan of action once I have completed this course is to enhance my skills further. I will seek to work on the units associated with business. I hope to incorporate another avenue of support for the growth of human potential in Brunei.
