students ProfileThere are two elements in a class: the teacher and the student. The most important action a teacher must do for a students is understand. Depending on their language level, the teacher will know how to talk to them, how much they know, if they have ever studied the language, what problems they may have in learning and what are the appropriate new structures and vocabulary to introduce. How old are your students? Children and adults learn in different ways, are interested in things which can be quite different and don't have the same motivations even if they are at the same level. These level in which to catalogue the students are: Beginners, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-intermediate and Advanced. Each of these levels will also have different needs and will not all use the same material. Beginners need a more attention for they can be divided into: false beginners, absolute beginners, young beginners, adult beginners and beginners who don't know the roman alphabet. Other then the differences in level, the rapport with the student and the class changes if it's an individual lesson or a class. With individual lessons, students will be more motivated and will have very specific needs that the teacher has to balance with what is necessary. As many exercises will be done having the teacher as a partner, it's inevitable that the rapport becomes closer than it would be in a class. With a group of students there are other dynamics and the teacher is more a figure which gives a good example, monitors, prompts and who the students can refer to. Other than all these categories and structures, the best way to know how to teach a student is to know them. The motivation that pushes them to study can be of any kind and knowing it will surely be useful; as soon as you see a lack of interest, a way to catch their attention is teach something inherent to their motivation. In a class it's difficult to follow all the students but if some are known to be slow learners then give them the possibility to catch up, or slow down the pace (being careful not to bore the fast learners.) By monitoring the students during activities that cover reading, listening, speaking and writing, the teacher can take notice how some students will have activities in which they are stronger. Obviously all of this information can be collected in time, but the faster you get it, the better it is for them. Some things a teacher can ask the students directly, If the've already studied English they will know. Different from the motivation is the reason, students can start studying because their job requires it, depending on if they need it for the future, if they are overlooked for a promotion because of this lack, they could be already using the English language in their job but must improve the level or they could be out of job and looking for a new one and want to increase their possibilities. All this information is vital to understand a student and know how to prompt and interest them. To know the students present and future is a good start but to complete the profile the teacher must also know the past. Where is the student from? Cultural background is important! Many countries don't study the Latin alphabet which is fundamental to learn how to read and write English, and these students need to spend more time on reading and writing. Also many problems can be anticipated if the teacher knows something of their cultural background. What if a student has had a bad experience of learning? It will take more time to get them involved and participating. It can be discouraging learning a new language when you don't even like studying in general. The most important thing is to make your students feel comfortable and confident in an environment where they can make mistakes and learn in peace without being judged. If a student feels that they are in this kind of ambient then it will be easier for them to open up to the teacher and be more motivated in learning a language.
