Course Materials for the TeacherCourse Materials for the teacher are a major resource for the new esl teacher. I have had teaching experience but not in ESL. Classroom management and some other facets of teaching are interchangeable, to a great extent, between traditional public school teaching assignments and an assignment for teaching ESL. But regardless of this interchange it is important that the new esl teacher has resources available. I am sure that the first day on-the-job, the new teacher will be apprehensive and feel unprepared. The material resources are readily available to relieve this apprehension and further prepare the new teacher to proceed in the profession. The experienced esl teacher has had the time to build their repertoire with ideas, worksheets, activities, visual aids and a proven procedure that works for them. However the new esl teacher does not have this base and must rely on the course which only initially prepares them. Course materials for almost every facet of teaching ESL are readily available. It is my purpose to in this paper to provide an outline of some of the books, websites, periodicals etc that will assist the new esl teacher to develop their own way of teaching which is effective and interesting to both the student and teacher. First let us look at course books for teachers. These books provide a complete format for teaching ESL. Of course there are many types of books available which are specifically designed for particular types of students. First the teacher must determine the makeup of the class which involves the level of English to be taught, age, reasons and goals for study, culture and many more factors that are involved in the makeup of the class. Lets look at a few of the more comprehensive course books that are available. TEACHING ESL SYSTEM: Interchange Third Edition: is a four level, multi-skills English series for adult and young adult learners. This is a comprehensive system includes a teachers manual, student handbook and a workbook for additions activities and support. New Headway English Course: This includes a teacher?s resource book that accompanies each student level book. Keep Talking: Communicative Fluency Activities for Language Teaching by Friederike Klippel Designing Language Courses: A Guide for Teachers GRAMMAR: The Grammar Book: An ESL/EFL Teacher?s Course CHILDREN: Educating Second Language Children: The Whole Child, The Whole Curriculum, The Whole Community BEGINNERS: New American Streamline Departures: Beginners PRONUNCIATION: Teaching Pronunciation: A Reference for Teachers of English to Speakers of other Languages BUSINESS: Teach Business English (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) CLASSROOM PROBLEMS: Learner English: A Teachers Guide to Interference and other Problems. This is just one but there are so many available for both children and adults. Now let us look at various periodicals that would help to keep us current on changes and improvements in teaching ESL. PERIODICALS: ESL Magazine ? a magazine which reports on all aspects of the ESL field Essential Teacher ? put out by tesol and provides practical articles for esl teachers. Hands-On English ? written by teacher for teachers. Filled with helpful hints and ideas to make teaching easier. Internet TESL Journal ? an online journal with articles, research papers, lesson plans, classroom handouts and other teaching ideas ELT Journal ? a quarterly publication for those involved in ESL teaching Asian EFL Journal ? an online journal for learning and teaching English English Teaching Professional ? a leading practical magazine for ESL teachers worldwide EFL Web ? an online magazine for EFL and ESL teachers The resources are literally endless with not only books and periodicals but CD?s too. Many of the books can be ordered and downloaded to a computer. This is a great advantage when living overseas where bookstores are not readily available and shipping is unreliable. Many of the books can be downloaded in a matter of minutes. This is just a selection of books available but ones that I have reviewed online. There are many aspects of teaching ESL and there are materials for teachers that can take you on from the point where we have come. There is much to learn and possibly these books and periodicals can expand your knowledge in the field. I have come through this course realizing that I have just touched the surface and more experience and studying is required to be the quality of teacher that I strive for. It is difficult as a new esl teacher to feel confident that first day. With further study and preparation from some of the books and periodicals listed one can attain that confidence and really make a difference in a student?s life.
