Things I wish I'd known before starting this courseSaying that this course was eye-opening is somewhat of an understatement. Not only was I able to find out exactly what I didn?t know myself about the English language, I learned exactly what it means to be a teacher. I also got to relive my first grade grammar lessons that I loathed so much back then, but wish so desperately I had followed more closely today. When I first looked into the idea of teaching english abroad, I tried to find loopholes in any job offering that didn?t require a TEFL certificate to teach. I wanted to be able to teach the English language with the knowledge I already had, and I thought that I was prepared myself to go ahead and do so. Man, was I ever wrong. The importance of having an official TEFL certificate is twofold. First of all, it allows you to find legitimate jobs. The more I looked for a job that didn?t require certification, the more I found that the ones that didn?t were either low-paying or illegitimate. I ran into many unorganized schools that looked as if they were willing to take anybody to teach English. While this seemed appealing (and cheaper!) at first, the more I thought about it, the more I craved being wanted. I thought that if a school was looking for somebody, I wanted to be the one they chose out of many applications, not the one they took because they were desperate or unorganized. I wish I had known this before the course because it would have saved me a lot of time, effort and energy searching desperately for schools that didn?t require a certificate. Had I known that the course would be this refreshing, interesting and educational; I would have jumped on board as soon as the idea to teach English abroad came to mind. I also wish I had known more English grammar prior to taking this course. The bulk of my study and difficulty from the coursework came from not knowing most of the grammar points prior to beginning the lesson. Taking my time through each grammar point, however, I quickly learned how quickly I could pick it back up. I may not have exactly studied English grammar since grade school, but I use the language every day. I was merely putting a label on what I already knew. Then, the grammar came quickly to me. Part of my reasoning for not wanting to take the course in the first place was because I didn?t want to have to struggle through differentiating between the past perfect and the past continuous, as I remembered what a headache that caused in the first grade. However, having completed the course, I?m thankful that I was able to relearn what I didn?t remember so quickly, so that teaching it will prove to be less difficult had I not enrolled in the course in the first place. I wish I had known how much fun this course was going to be. It turns out that I really enjoy learning about the English language, and will likely then enjoy teaching it. This step in completing the course only makes me more excited for my next step in life: teaching English as a foreign language!
