Why Complete a TEFL CourseMany people may wonder why the need to complete a TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) course when they are born as native english speakers. They might think that they don?t need to get a certificate just for that simple fact. What people don?t realize is that completing this course helps greatly with lesson planning and giving ideas in general. In February 2011, I lived in spain for a little less than six months to teach English to the children in the host family I lived with. Before I left, I was one of those people who thought it would be no problem to go abroad and teach English because not only can I speak Spanish but I?m a native english speaker. Once I got there I realized that it wasn?t as easy as I thought it would be. I had vague ideas of little lessons I could do with the girls and when it came time to actually teach them certain things, I had trouble trying to teach it because I didn?t know how to clearly explain it. It seemed simple enough for me, but there were times that it became difficult to try to explain it to the younger girls. By the time I left, I felt mostly successful because English grades were improved and they could understand more English as well as speak a bit better, but I could not get them to get pronouns correct. What I mean is that they kept calling girls ?he? and boys ?she?. No matter how many little games, explanations, or examples I used, they just could not stick it in their minds. Other than that, I felt proud in what I accomplished with the girls without actually being a certified teacher. Now that I am home, I wish that I could have taken a tefl course before I left. I feel as if it would have helped me prepare better before I left for spain and while I was there already working with the girls. I feel as if they would have gotten more use of my English knowledge if I had done that. Also, even though the mother says that she is happy with what I accomplished with the girls, I have my doubts about how truly happy the mother was with me. That was my inspiration for taking a course because I do plan on going abroad to teach English again. Maybe I am a bit biased since I already lived abroad and taught English, but a tefl course is an extremely good idea to consider. The course offers things that a teacher should know including tenses, different types of lesson plan formats, difficulties a teacher can encounter, the different levels of a student, and it can even get more specific if wanted. Unless you are an English teacher, I feel as if it can be very easy to not think about past, present and future tenses. A tefl course refreshes these tenses in your mind. Basically, a tefl course teaches you some of the things that you?ll need to teach as well as giving fun ideas on how to accomplish it. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is aspiring to teach English as a foreign language.
