English as a global languageEnglish is important to the Teaching English as a Foreign Language community, because it is on its way to becoming the global language. If people did not want to learn English, then there would not be a need for English teachers in foreign countries. If this was the case then there would be no such thing as Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Just about everywhere you go someone is speaking English. students in countries all around the world know that learning English is a huge skill to further their education, career, and life. Individuals that can speak more than one language are often sought after in careers in all areas of business. Numerous students from foreign countries learn English as they learn their native tongue, because they know the importance of how it will affect their future. They believe that English is their path to success. In fields such as science, knowing English is vital. This is because scientist the world over need to communicate on all the findings that they do in their research. Jacques Melitz writes that English is important because ?it is more likely to be translated, and easier to reach a world audience.? Science is important to every country in the world. If each scientist spoke only their own native tongue, we would not be where we are today in scientific findings. Being able to communicate with one another allows scientists to work together to find answers. Another important industry of English is business. Businesses across the globe are in constant contact, they need to communicate in order to keep things running smoothly. The best way to achieve this is English-it is a common language to most countries in contact with the united states. If employees of other countries did not speak English then they would not be able to expand their business. This is vital to the economy, because it creates jobs, and keeps money flowing from country to country. Teaching English as a foreign language has become a necessity to various countries, in order for them to keep up with the evolvement of society. Teaching English as Foreign Language teachers are needed all over. As English becomes dominant and a global language; English teachers move to various countries to fill the need to help others learn English. John McWhorter says, ?English is dominant in a way that no language ever has been before. It is vastly unclear to me what actual mechanism could uproot English given conditions as they are? (Mydans). Some ?scholars say that about one-fourth of the world?s population can communicate to some degree in English? (Mydans). If that many people speak English, then it is obviously a language that appeals to those who want to educate themselves. ?It has consolidated its dominance as the language of the Internet, where 80 percent of the world?s electronically stored information is in English? (Mydans). As you can see with statistics like these; English is headed toward being the global language, if it is not already. This is why English as a global language is important to TEFL.
