British vs American EnglishI?m hoping to give you some information about why, how, where there are differences between British and American English. This subject was chosen by me as being Australian and coming from Australian English l found it quite amusing at the differences between these two similar languages while living aboard. If you?re looking for all the different words and pronunciations between the two languages, buy a dictionary that tells you because lm just covering why or how they have become to be different. Body 1607 is where l start as this is the year given when English came to America. The British Empire had been very busy around the world colonizing/trading from about 897 where ever it roamed. By the early 19th century a quarter of the world?s population spoke English. So they have been developing there English or the ?original? for a good 800 years before that ?coming to America episode began?. 404 years later we now have BrE (British English) AmE (American English) along with quite a few other versions of English throughout the world. There are lots of differences in the two include pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, idioms, formatting of dates and numbers, although the differences in written and most spoken grammar structure tend to be much less than those of other aspects of the language in terms of mutual simplicity. I found that BrE speakers where quiet capable of understanding AmE and picking up/out the differences for what they meant in the mainstream but going the other way AmE speakers could be quiet confused when encountering BrE now these are what l believe are the main factors - education, locality, experience, travel. A little side not of reference is that BrE seem to lack sometimes the ability to change tone or style to suit the atmosphere that silver spoon queens English over tone maybe?!. While AmE can be the complete opposite. Also of amusing interest was seeing the confusion on the faces of German students taught English in their schooling system when coming into contact with AmE and or AuE. Methodology Let?s now run my reasoning lm choosing these four, first up is education although similar in the age?s of progression the differences between English and American systems are quite considerable now days from what l have observed over the years the old Empire still has very strong push in English and English Literature throughout school where l found the USA having removed itself from colonial control all those years ago( 1776-1783 War of Independence) developed an more flexible and easier to attend higher learning system although l?d say it?s more quantity over quality in the broad spectrum from what l?ve seen. Travel is the area of exploration, seeing the wide world is a major difference between the 2 languages. As we know from history the English as far back as 897 where out and about upon planet earth so the influence they had and received has been around and on going for a long time. Modern day as lm more familiar with see?s the English as still big travelers and settlers in foreign lands maybe this is because their home country isn?t that big/climate(very gloomy)/economic/boring or an underlying nature of the English people throughout the ages (parents encourage the going abroad etc). Americans on the other hand seem quite happy to stay put in their home county let alone leave the state and god forbid leave the country, now don?t get me wrong this is fine they have the 3rd or 4th largest country in the world and the cost of living is quite reasonable if not cheap, with a varied climate and everything on offer so why leave?! As a total population they seem reluctant to travel outside the ?known?. Breaking this down a little more l noticed that eastern seaboard (San Francisco to Mexico) where more travelled or familiar with English ?BrE? while the western seaboard area new york to New Hampshire still holds a quite an English feel and understanding/experienced/travelled amongst them. Now locality of these areas is also to be considered as there settling/starting points of movements in today?s travel as well throughout history, from the Spanish influence in California to the English overtone of High western seaboard. Media wise there wasn?t so much of a push for the locals to ?see the world? where the English do. With this though, both languages are now readily available through social/world media 24/7 to all, so the understanding of each is seeping into each other?s society to some degree. RESULTS The differences are there between BrE to AmE l think are closing ever so slightly through the advent mainly of technology interaction thru the spectrums of TV/film/internet/ books but, now as the world turns thru political and economical maybe it will slow some more as we seek the safety of home or grow as we try and find greener pastures. Travel and contact with different speakers is a great way of learning or comprehending difference and its probably the best form of recognizing the two. As both countries actually grow in population and ethnic diversity it could also be said that BrE and AmE will develop even more considerable difference?s with this influence e.g. Spanish influence in American is creeping further North and east while england?s Indian influence is stronger all the time. It?s also good to remember that English is believed to originally come from Scandinavian/German influence way back when
