This unit covered the grammatical aspects of reported speech, giving examples of how sentences change from direct to reported form. Useful words indicating the time when an action was said to have taken place (for example, the previous day, the following day, the preceding evening etc) were also covered in some detail. This unit served as a good refresher on reported speech, which is a topic that causes some confusion among my students.Reported speech can be confusing to second language learners. It will be important to clarify the usages with students that are old enough to understand the concepts and rules. Younger students will probably learn mostly by modeling. Teaching students to use and recognize conditionals if useful when teaching cause and effect. It would be good for them to notice in their reading, listening and then to use the skills in their writing.
