Classroom DisciplineWhen first entering a class it is important to sent up guidelines and rules right away. The students need to realize the teacher is not their buddy. Using the first lesson for new students in Lesson 20 of the tesol course can be used to help facilitate this. It has the ability to set the tone for the classroom, getting the students involved and learning about the teacher as well as the teacher gaining more insight on the students. Throughout the course of teaching the students, the teacher must be keep the rules consistent and consistently enforce them. It is very important when disciplining, that the students do not feel a personal attack and for the teacher to remain calm and poised. The manner in which a teacher disciplines can turn against them, the teacher needs to be taken serious but not be too serious. When disciplining students enforce the rules, but do it with a smile. Keep it light so the students do not feel that you are upset or so you do not upset the entire class. The idea is for the teacher to keep their patience and stay calm. In order to help with this, the teacher needs to be diligent in recognizing potential problems that can occur during the lesson plan and have a plan on how they will deal with this. In the lesson plan template, there are sections that state potential problems for the teacher and student, when writing the lesson plan if the teacher can utilize these sections to the fullest, they can help minimize chaos and have better control of the class when problems arise without becoming emotional. A large part of misbehavior in the classroom is due to the students being bored due to lack of interest. To keep this from occurring, a good lesson plan that keeps the all the students engaged and active all the while keep encouraging the all students, making sure that none is left out. The tesol course has done a great job teaching and guiding on how to set up successful lesson plans, if what is learned through this course is applied to the classroom then success in minimizing misbehavior in the classroom will be obtained. Even with a good lesson plan, it is up to the teacher to make sure that all the students are integrated in the lesson, take part and that none feels left out. But not all misbehavior is due to a poorly designed lesson plan. Some students will be more apt to talk and loose focus even with a ?perfect? lesson plan. In situations where students have a hard time staying on task if the teacher simply stands by the student, this in most cases will get the student to cease talking. There will be some students that act out because they want the attention. This is important to be aware of. It is not ideal to reward the student who is misbehaving by giving the attention they are demanding, instead take the time to reward the student next to the misbehaved student and compliment on how they are doing so well. Focus on the good behavior rather than the bad, give the student that is misbehaving the option to change their behaviors and do as the student next to them is. A lot of times this will get the misbehaving student to act more appropriately, once they do, compliment them on their behavior as well. Lead by example. Keeping a positive attitude and keeping to positive words will help situations out immensely.
