Foreign Language Experience During my junior year of college, I spent one semester in an intensive French language program in Normandie, france. I had six instructors all with different strengths and weaknesses that I intend to address in this article. Mr. Senoze, phonetics. Mr. Senoze was a very friendly and personable instructor. He had a good sense of humor that kept his multilingual class entertained. He also accommodated the different nationalities in his classroom. When we learned the 'r' sound, he worked closely with the Americans. He catered to Asians when differentiating the 'b' and 'p' sounds. His only weakness was that he expected all of the students to know the phonetic alphabet without him teaching it. I had already taken a phonetics course so I helped my peers but the class was very difficult for them. From him I have learned the importance of being entertaining and also making sure all of the students are equipped with the knowledge they need. Ms. Levittoux, written and oral expressions. This class focused on listening comprehension and speaking. She was a very thorough teacher. She went through all the material in a very organized manner and we always understood what she wanted us to do. However, she was very critical of her students and the lack of motivation hurt the morale of the class. When students would be attempting a sentence, she would act extremely confused if the student was having trouble. I will make it a point to be more patient with my students than she was with me. Motivation is a key part in getting students to learn. Ms. Champod, French culture. By far my favorite teacher, she was friendly and personable, entertaining and motivating. She had a very gentle nature but commanded the respect of her students. I will certainly try to emanate the same balance of kindness and austerity. Mr. Allix, French literature. Mr. Allix was very passionate about literature. He was also very funny and made his students very comfortable. Unfortunately, he spoke for 2/3 of the class time and was not very engaging. He used no visual aids and didn't not command the interest of any of his students. I learned from him that it takes more than passion to be a good instructor. Ms. Ozouf, French grammar. My peers and I had a running joke that Ms. Ozouf must spend a lot of time at parties outside of the classroom. She always spoke to us like she was exhausted and would rather be at home. She often wore the same outfit two days in a row. She had little patience with her students and showed no liveliness. An attribute I did value in her was her flexibility. I became very ill the week of her test and she let me do a makeup test without hesitation. She even stayed late to deliver the test. Mr. Spiroux, phonology. Mr. Spiroux was very knowledgeable and spoke many languages. His class had over 100 students and he didn't keep track of attendance. As a result, fewer than 50 students showed up to his weekly class. He lectured 100% of the time in a very monotone fashion which made the class pretty boring. As a teacher, I'd like to incorporate all of these lessons into my teaching style. Like Mr. Senoze, I want to entertain my class. Like Ms. Levittoux, I want to be organized and give clear instructions. Like Ms. Champod, I will be gentle and patient while maintaining order in the classroom. I want to be passionate like Mr. Allix and knowledgeable like Mr. Spiroux. I feel my experience learning another language will make me more understanding of my students and I will utilize the methods that worked for my peers and I.
