It is fortunate for students that both the present and past tenses in English have the same form and most of the time the only thing that changes is the tense of the auxiliary verb. However this is where their good fortune ends. Both the present and past tenses in English come with a long list of very precise instructions on their applications which really makes one realise how rigidly we are forced to order our thoughts while using this language. It is also very unfortunate that the past simple and participle forms of some of the most common verbs used in English are irregular and must simply be memorised. I imagine students will appreciate any type of activity designed to assist them in memorising these. While studying these tenses I personally found that simply having the bare grammar presented is quite boring and since there are so many different tenses one tends to confuse oneself even if the initial explanation of the grammar was well understood. I imagine that the different tenses are topics that must be revisited multiple times with a variety of engaging activities for students to fully master them.
