Working overseas as a military journalist, I worked with many foreign nationals, some from non-English speaking countries. Almost without exception the thing that most non-native English speakers had the most problems with when learning, speaking or writing in English was the verb tenses. For example, in Japanese there are really only two tenses, present+future and past, or perfective. The main difficulty with Japanese verb conjugation comes with polite and negative forms. For Japanese speakers, concepts like present perfect and present continuous are big stumbling blocks to learning English. As a former military journalist, one of the things that was constantly drilled into my head throughout my training has been verb tenses and when to use them. Print journalism and broadcast use different rules for which verb tenses to use. I had to keep all this stuff in my head when writing, editing or proofreading copy, so I like to think I know it quite well, but of course, even the best grammarians could use a brush up from time to time. I think for me, this could be a strong point during a career as a teacher.
