Why complete a TEFL courseThe notion of getting TEFL certified is one that must not be underestimated in the english teaching world. Many assume that simply being a native speaker of english is all that is necessary however this is very far from the truth. Countries like South Korea and japan that had previously accepted english teachers solely on the merit of being a native english speaker have also caught onto the notion that more training is necessary effectively teach the language. Fundamentally this idea is quite easy to break down and understand. When one speaks their own native language, very little thought is put into why they use the particular grammatical structure or vocabulary in communication. This is primarily based on the fact that communicating in a native language is classified as an innate ability meaning that one can produce the language without any significant processing of the language in their brains as the brain has already concreted the language rules. The native speaker can then speak off general emotion both very fluently and very rapidly. Unfortunately this process is very counterproductive in reference to teaching due to the fact that in order to teach a language, one must be able to break it down into parts and explain it in the most logical way possible. Most directly this means that a native english speaker may not inherently understand the way the parts of the english language work individually and furthermore may be using the existing fluent knowledge of english incorrectly without being aware of it (Slang, shortcuts etc...). It is for this primary reasoning that a native english speaker may need to learn these practical parts of the english language and how to teach it through excessive training (certificate degree etc...). Obviously the pace at which they learn/re-learn these fundamental parts of the english language will be an extremely rapid one as they already have the general whole idea/picture of the english language. Quite simply it can be said to be more of deductive learning than anything else. Earlier there was mention of popular TEFL markets like South Korea and Japan taking notice to this inconsistency of not having any TEFL training. It is very clear that they have experienced problems with allowing the minimal qualification to teach as simply being a native speaker due to the recent change in this policy. Currently a great majority of institutions are now setting a prerequisite of having the equivalent of a TEFL certificate in order to teach. This mandate has made it very clear that even the most confident of native english speaker must have extensive training to be successful. In conclusion it must be again asserted that taking a TEFL course is extremely beneficial, and now necessary to teach english in the majority of foreign TEFL market. One who wasnt interested in taking one must now seriously re-think a career route or accept this requirement. In the interest of all fairness, one who is truly interested in teaching english wouldnt fret from such a requirement, but simply welcome it. It provides one more comfort with TEFL which is essential for optimal success.
