Role of the TeacherTeachers take on several responsibilities in education. There are five roles that I think are significant as a teacher. The teacher needs to be an organizer, a manager, a prompter, a tutor, and an assessor. Initially, the teacher needs to be organized. The teacher arranges the activities and setting to help the class move smoothly. Teachers should have a lesson plan prepared for all classes. First, lesson plans assist in preparation. The teacher stays on the topic for the class when using a lesson plan. Lesson plans record what has happened in the class. This creates a comfortable learning environment for the teacher and the students. The students know what is expected of them through an organized setting. Furthermore, a teacher manages the setting of the classroom. A teacher?s presence is important to a class. The teacher shows involvement through eye contact, gestures, and using his/her voice. For example, a teacher can use his/her voice by giving simple instructions. As well, classroom seating arrangements are essential to the students learning environment. Different seating arrangements can determine the kinds of activities. It can show the teacher?s role and it can decide the expectations of the students. Student grouping, like individual, class, pair and group work, can govern if the students are successful in learning by allowing students to properly practice what they have learned during the study. Third, a teacher should prompt. When a student is struggling to participate in class, the teacher can prompt the student to help him or her get started. Prompting can take on many forms such as, giving simple instructions, using language lower than the students? level, using gestures and pictures. This moves the student along through the activity. The teacher can reduce the teacher talking time by effective prompting. In turn, it allows students to actively participate in the class by more student speaking time. Fourth, the teacher needs to be a tutor. A good teacher can identify where students need help. For example, the teacher should observe and evaluate the students. When the teacher sees a weakness, then the teacher can address the weakness with information and activities to help strengthen the student?s understanding. This will bring confidence and maturity to each student. Tutoring allows the teacher to help the student understand when there is a weakness. In an activity, the teacher needs to be sure to give equal attention and support to all students. Finally, a teacher evaluates the class. In order to know the student?s language ability the teacher needs to evaluate him/her. Evaluating is performed in several different manners like, tutorials and tests. Tutorials and informal testing are good practice for the students to become more at ease with formal testing. In addition, the teacher needs to assess each student?s language abilities. When assessing, the teacher looks to see if he/she is achieving growth or needs to reclassify his/her language level. By evaluating, the teacher is able to determine solutions for language difficulties. These are five roles that I think are important as a teacher. The teacher needs to be an organizer, a manager, a prompter, a tutor, and an assessor. Through these various roles the teacher becomes a benefit to the students? educational lives.
