In this unit i learned about the importance of productive skills; speaking and writing. Writing tends to be overlooked as an important skill because many students wish to learn a new language to speak it. Writing is important because it allows a deeper understanding of a new language and when writing one must be accurate in the meaning or else the meaning will get lost in the writing, unlike speaking where others can understand your meaning if it is not perfect. I also learned about the ways to construct ESA lessons for both speaking and writing.In this unit, I have learnt the different methodologies in ESL teaching - from the Grammar-Translation Approach all the way to the Lexical Approach. This unit also taught us of the method that would be effective in motivating the student, such as the different Engage, Study & Activate (ESA) methods. Also, I learnt that we should only correct students at certain stages of the lesson, and to let the student complete their speeches before providing any corrections, instead of interrupting them immediately which might end up demotivating the student.
