This unit goes over methods of constructing what may constitute an engaging, effective class period. They are designed with students in mind and assume rather flexible forms that allow room for adaptations that might be needed for a particular situation. I have mentioned this in a previous unit reflection: though I have been a student for many years, I have never taken the time to examine the ways a teacher can structure a class. Reading about the ESA lesson (Engage-Study-Activate) was helpful for me in distinguishing between exercises and activities that hold different goals (Engage and Study, for example, do not aim for the same goals) but with the purpose of facilitating a greater objective in language learning. I will definitely be referring back to this unit for activities that I can implement in my own classes. The end of this unit was also extremely eye-opening to read. I came from an educational background where it was very common for teachers to engage in over-correction that would discourage students from learning and develop a general culture of intellectual apathy, so that unfortunate experience is what I know and have come from. I know that over-correction is unnecessary and disheartening for students but did not otherwise know how to combat those tendencies. This unit has made me think critically about how to interact with students in ways that will motivate them to learn and engage with me and each other.
