Lesson planning takes time to really get good at. Until one has been teaching for a while, it's easy to underestimate how much time an activity may take, and it is important to be flexible in the lesson in order to create the best learning experience and environment for our students. I remember when I first started teaching piano lessons, I followed a very similar process. I wrote the objective of the lesson, some possible activities to get the student to achieve the objective, and the approximate time each activity would take. It's fairly arduous to keep writing such detailed lesson plans, but it is quite important for beginning teachers. Usually students can sense when a teacher is just \"winging it,\" so a lesson plan that serves as a general organizational guide for the class can help give a sense of purpose to the class. I liked seeing the various handouts in this unit. They give me a more detailed idea of what teaching an English class will be like. Trying to relate each class and topic to something in a student's life, like animals they've seen or countries they've visited, seems like a good way of making the lesson feel more important to them. I also like the idea of doing self-evaluations after each lesson so that one can improve their teaching. I've occasionally recorded myself teaching piano lessons, and I always pick up on unconscious habits while watching the video later. It's a great way of self evaluating.
