Modals are verbs that can express different ideas and states. We can separate them into next several groups: 1.Obligation (must) - to get the dentist office on time, I must leave home by 10. 2.Possibility or probability (may, might, can, could ) - It may rain later. 3.Permeation and Prohibition (may) - You may borrow my pen. 4.Ability (can, could, be able to) - He can write with both hands. 5.Advice (should) - You shouldn?t drink this medicine. And here occurs the first mistake that students can do - they can easily add to after the modal verb. Or some modal verbs like can and may can be easily misunderstand and can be used in inappropriate way. Also teacher must bear in mind, that there are different forms of modals in the past and in the future. Do prevent these issues, it?s better to use different examples and gap-filling worksheets. To improve students understanding of usage, it?s better to use different role-play games; teacher should supply students with some real objects (signs, brochures). There are two types of voices in English: 1. Passive voice - The roof was damaged by the hurricane. 2. Active voice - The hurricane damaged the roof. We can see that the word hurricane, in the second sentence, is the agent and it tells about what it did. In the first sentence we talk about the roof and describe what happened to it. So we use the passive voice, when we don?t know the agent or want to omit the agent.
