This unit is about modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. Modal auxiliary verbs include may, must, have to, should, could, and several others. Modal auxiliary verbs are used to express ideas such as ability, advice, possibility, permission, and obligation. Modal auxiliary verbs sometimes have small differences between them, making them difficult for students. For instance, when expressing requests the difference between \"can\" and \"could\" is the level of politeness. This unit also covers passive voice, which is often used when the performer of an action is not known, not important, or when you don't want to say who the performer of the action is. Clauses have three categories: independent clauses, dependent clauses, and relative clauses. An important point to note is that relative clauses can be defining or non-defining, and the usage of commas differs in each. Finally, this unit covers phrasal verbs, which can be intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable. Phrasal verbs can be very difficult for students to learn, but it is important for the teacher to introduce them gradually in the classroom.
