This Unit examines modal auxiliary verbs and passive voice in detail with a brief introduction of phrasal verbs and relative clauses. In English, a modal auxiliary verb when paired with another verb expresses ability, advice, deduction, obligation, offer, permission, possibility, prediction, prohibition, promise and request. It is important to explain students the different usages of modal verbs and how to construct a sentence by using them. The active voice is the one we use most of the time. In the active voice, the object receives the action of the verb. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action of the verb. We use the passive voice when we want to emphasize the receiver of the action, when we don't know who did the action, when we think the agent is not important or when we dont want to reveal the identity of someone. It is important that a teacher introduces the passive voice to the students after the explanation of the active voice structure, and let them practice the passive voice by changing active sentences to passive sentences, or by using other classroom activities to make the lesson more interesting.
