This unit has taught me about the importance of lesson planning and why a beginner teacher should aim to have at least a rough plan for every lesson. While having a rigid plan may sacrifice some flexibility in terms of adapting to activities students are enjoying etc. it's still a very sound idea to have a plan in place in order to have smooth lessons. Plans should include Learner Outcomes which state what the teacher would like the students to be able to do by the end of the lesson and then a series of other fields which pertain to how the lesson will be carried out (location, students, language point, teaching aids, procedure with timing etc.) Plans will differ depending on the language level and various other factors of the students and whether the lesson is to be of Straight Arrow, Boomerang or Patchwork form. It can also be important for teachers to use Self Evaluation forms to monitor their lessons and reflect on what was successful and what could use improving. By focusing on strengths and weaknesses, a teacher can help in their own development and work towards making more positive and successful lessons in the future.
