In unit two I was given a detailed overview of the parts of speech in English. This section of the course explained what nouns, adjectives, verbs, articles, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions are, and how they work. Nouns are used to name people, places, animals, things, qualities, and states. There are various types, including common and proper. Adjectives are used to describe nouns. They come in two types either comparatives or superlatives. Verbs refer to actions, as well as states. Articles are used to describe singular nouns. There are only three words that are articles; the, a, or an. Adverbs add meaning to verbs, and are mostly formed with -ly at the end. Gerunds turn a verb into a noun by adding ing at the end. Pronouns normally come in four types; personal, possessive, reflexive, and relative. Prepositions form a relationship between a word and either a pronoun or a noun. An conjunctions connect two words of the same type. Though it may be easy to understand the purpose of each part, the art of putting them all together can be complicated and difficult for someone when they are learning English.
