As the EFL student advances their learning of English, there are certain grammar points that are of higher difficulty to learn and explain. The first one is modal auxiliary verbs. It is easy to memorize which are they but their use is what makes them complicated. Modals give a different meaning to the sentence and each can indicate a different tone or level of politeness. Students might find it difficult to distinguish minor differences of using one modal versus the other. The next point is the passive voice. English teaching and even normal everyday speaking begins almost completely with active voice. The passive voice will sound strange and even more literary for the student not used to it. The next grammar point are clauses. English learning also begins with very simple sentence structures. As students' progress they can come across ways of combining several ideas into one sentence instead of making it into two or more sentences which is what relative clauses do. Last are the phrasal verbs which consist of more than one word. Each point needs time, an effective explanation, and a good amount of practice for the student to learn.
