Foreign Language ExperienceI began learning basic spanish back in Middle School, and found it somewhat interesting. Then when I dislocated my shoulder I was unable to participate in gym class, so I ended up doubling up on spanish class. That is when I became more interested in spanish. I decided to take all four years of spanish that my school offered in my first two years of High School, and then went on to take the courses online that were offered with a friend of mine. I became very interested in the language when I became friends with a girl from Sonora, Mexico. I would go over to her house for dinner and their family would be speaking spanish at home and I would pick up on a word or two here or there, and I would also try saying a word or two to them. I was invited to her Quinceanera and fell in love with the mexican culture ever since. I decided that to have a true understanding of the mexican culture I must learn the language. I talked with my spanish teacher at my High School and he set me up with our local foreign exchange program to a sister city that is connected with a local river. I didnt want to miss out on any of my High School years so I waited until after graduation and decided to study abroad at a High School there for a semester and return to the states for the spring semester to begin college. Emersion is the true way to learn a language. Within a month of being below the U.S.-Mexico border I had no problem carrying on an everyday conversation in spanish. I decided to study spanish in a professional way as well. I declared spanish as my major at the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse. Also in order to further study other cultures I declared geography as my minor. My specialty area of geography is without a doubt cultural geography. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse also offers a wide variety of study abroad programs, so I decided to study in Mexico again. The two times I studied in Mexico were in totally opposite sides of the country. I had the opportunity of noticing the huge differences not only in the language in the two different regions but also the cultural differences. I graduated with a Bachelors degree in spanish and Geography almost a year ago now. Since then I have been interpreting both professionally and free lance. I have spent most of my time interpreting in a medical setting. There are so many different specialty vocabularies to grasp. I have also taken a course of Business spanish. I plan on furthering my studies by means of a community interpreting certificate one day. I believe knowing several languages opens up the door to so much more. I would like to take my knowledge from this TEFL course along with my knowledge from my Bachelors Degree and teach students english. I feel truly prepared to go get some classroom time observing other teachers, and then I will be ready to teach my own students. Ideally I will teach english to spanish speaking individuals. There are so many things you can do with the spanish language, especially as the spanish speaking population only continues to grow in the united states.
