one to one lesson Teaching students on a one to one basis is ideally for those pupils who wish to have a self-catered syllabus towards theirs needs and wants. Students feel that they can gain more from this method as the student progresses at their own level and is independent of weaker students who may slow down a group in learning. Individual lessons have both advantages and disadvantages for both the student and teacher. The advantages are: ? No mixed levels ? Highly motivated students ? Needs and wants can be clearly be determined ? A better rapport is developed between the student and teacher. Disadvantages: ? Loss of classroom dynamic ? Lack of concentration and tiredness from both the student and teacher ? Unable to do group activities and interact with different people ? Less formal. Suggestions for maximizing a one on one lesson: ? Ask the student what they plan to learn from you and how they will implement it ? Find out the students language problems. I.e. Pronunciation ? Exchange phone numbers in case there is cancellation between either the teacher or student ? Maximize on the students interests and experiences. I.e. Use their hobbies for them to explain grammar and word pronunciation ? Use different activities and techniques such as word games (hangman) or crosswords ? Find out any problems that the student may have with the work. I.e. complicated grammar or excess workload (pressure) ? Try and determine what the student wants and what you think they need to improve on. Suitable activities for one on one student?s in addition to course book material ? Short stories. Possibly from english fables or nursery rhymes ? Articles from new papers or magazines. I.e. if the person is into sports reading articles and highlighting new words or things of interest ? Quizzes. Quizzes on pass material learnt and positive feedback on where they need to improve ? Discuss relevant affairs in their home country and get them to express their opinion ? Personal history. Description of their family, hobbies, whether they know any other languages ? Listening. Playing various audio and determining if they understand the theme and topic ? Pronunciation. Listening to what difficulties the student may have in speech and correcting them. Making notes of difficult words and using drilling and mouth diagrams to solve problems. ? Conduct the lesson like a group lesson, with grammar points, vocabulary and some conversation. Teachers can cater homework to their student?s needs, however it should be demonstrated to the student what is expected and if there are any problems with workload or other commitments. The teacher should only provide the student with what they think would be suitable for the student and whether they can progress with what is given. Teachers need to monitor and check that the vocabulary and grammar are suited to the student?s level and that the student is motivated to do the homework. Teachers can provide students with newspaper or magazine articles highlighting grammar and vocabulary that the teacher wishes the student to learn. The teacher can highlight and select material that is difficult and discuss it with the student. The teacher should also provide comprehension questions about the article so the student understands what he/she is reading. Overall one to one lessons can be valuable for both teacher and student as the teacher helps the student with their weakness and the student gives the teacher ideas of what needs to be taught.
