Role of a TeacherA range of roles and skills are necessary in order to become a good teacher. Teachers assume a wide variety of roles. One of the most important roles a teacher must assume is that of a manager. The teacher must be able to manage a group, manage activities and manage learning. The teacher is in charge of the class and activities and should feel comfortable standing in front of the class giving instructions and explanations. The teacher as a manager has to establish a routine with his/her students from the beginning. Once a routine has been established, it is difficult to change things, so it is important that the teacher is firm but fair from the start. The teacher should welcome the students at the door and set a pattern. A routine should be established for the following procedures; entering and leaving the classroom, when the students can leave their seats, when student conversation is allowed, etc. In language classes, the student should be instructed to use the target language for procedures such as asking permission to sharpen a pencil. The teacher should start the class in the same way and give gentle reminders to establish and respect routine, as this is better than confrontation later on. The teacher must act as a supervisor and warn and correct students if they are doing the wrong thing. The teacher will wish to supervise what is going on in the classroom and take notes for correction. This lets the teacher know how successful an activity has been. Teachers have to manage class activities and get all students involved and give equal attention to everyone. The teacher must lay down rules without being too dictatorial. Teachers can be considered role models. They are knowledgeable about their subjects. Teachers can offer guidance, support and inspiration. A teacher becomes a good teacher through years of experience and training, however, teachers must love teaching and pass on their enthusiasm. Teachers must create a good environment and also a professional one. The teacher must respect and instruct students. Modern foreign language teachers are role models as students should seek to imitate their pronunciation. The teacher should try to understand students and why they act in a certain way. Students may come from diverse backgrounds. Mutual respect is important. The teacher is neither a friend or an enemy to his or her students. Another very important role a teacher must assume is that of an instructor. It is the teacher?s role to instruct students and pass on his/her knowledge and enthusiasm for a subject. The teacher should lead discussions , guide tasks and ask questions. The teacher is a resource provider and should be organized and prepare creative lessons so that students don?t get bored. The teacher must educate and train students. The teacher can also be considered a commentator as the teacher will want to monitor activities ? pair work, group work and individual work and compliment jobs well done to encourage students, to give feedback and to prompt students who have run out of ideas. There are various other roles a teacher must assume such as that of a tutor when students are carrying out individual tasks, a participant ? the teacher may wish to participate in certain class activities with students ? to give an example or maybe just to make up the numbers. The teacher is also an assessor as students expect feedback and the teacher must monitor students? progress and therefore give class tests from time to time. In conclusion ? teachers must assume a variety of roles and the role assumed will depend on the classroom activity. Classroom management and the role of a manager are, however, the most important as this allows the teacher to control classroom activities and therefore to teach.
