Unit 2 gives us the introduction to grammar and it tackled the parts of speech. Each word in a sentence has its own classification which is in accordance to its purpose and meaning. These classifications are: 1) Nouns - refers to the names of people, animals, things and places. It has five types: common, proper, compound, abstract and collective. Nouns can also be classified as countable and uncountable. Examples of nouns are Emily, Canada and chair. 2) Adjectives - describes nouns. Examples would be the words big, tall and long. 3) Articles - is used to refer any member of the group or to a certain member of a group. Example of articles are a, an and the. 4) Verbs - are action words. It comes in four principal forms, namely; base form, past simple, past participle and present participle. Example of verbs are go, run and come. 5) Adverbs - it describes a verb and adds meaning to the action. Examples of adverbs are slowly, quietly and very much. 6) Gerunds - is a verb in -ing form that is used as a noun. 7) Pronouns - this substitute a noun and has four types, namely; personal (i, you), possessive (mine, yours), reflexive (myself, yourself) and relative (who, which). 8) Prepositions - this enables us to see the connection between a noun or pronoun with some other words in the sentence. Its three main types are time/date (before, after), movement (over, through) and place (over, under). As an ESL instructor, I believe that it is important to have knowledge in grammar because one way or another, we will find ourselves teaching the English grammar in class and it is better to know it than have your students lose their confidence in their teacher.
