Unit 12 is about Productive Skills. Productive skills are speaking and writing. The two main reasons for speaking and writing are need and desire to communicate. Accuracy and Fluency differences were also talked about. Accuracy activities are done in the study phase of the lesson and focus on producing correct language, grammar, and pronunciation. Fluency Activities are done in the study phase of the lesson and focus on being creative with the language, and speaking without stopping to think. Controlled activities are generally accuracy based. Guided activities are also accuracy based. Creative communication activities are fluency based. Encouraging students to speak can sometimes be challenging. It is important to make students feel comfortable with the language in the lesson and also have the topic be of interest. Pair and group work, careful planning, and plenty of controlled, guided practice before fluency activities will help students feel more comfortable. Before the lesson, decide the aims, predict problems, and make a careful timeline for the activities. During the activity, engage student interest using visual aids, putting vocabulary on the board, make sure to give clear instructions monitor, and be sure not to over correct. After the activity, provide feedback, focusing on what the students could do rather that what they couldn't do, but note glaring errors. Writing skills are sometimes left for homework, but when writing be sure to discuss handwriting, spelling, layout, and use creative writing such as poetry and plays. Games in the classroom can be a fun way of communicating in the classroom, but should always be planned and have a purpose.
