Cultural sensitivity in the classroomIt will be important for me as an ESL teacher to be culturally sensitive. Teachers can have a large influence on developing students to have an appreciation of other cultures and ethnic groups. Not only that, but teachers can influence students? cultural identity and help students be proud of their race and culture. There are multiple steps teachers can take to make sure they are creating a culturally sensitive environment. It is very important to first be aware of the cultures, customs, traditions, etc. of the students in the class. Teachers need to research the cultures of the students they will be teaching. It would be useful to read about typical religions affiliated with ethnic groups to learn about holidays that the students might be celebrating. Not only that, but students might have to wear certain types of clothing according to the cultural or religious beliefs. Part of creating a culturally sensitive environment in the classroom means teachers should never ask students to represent their race or religion when speaking. If students want to volunteer an idea or comment from the perspective of someone with their particular beliefs then that should be respected and valued for offering a unique perspective. However, a teacher should never as a student, ?As a Muslim, how do you feel about??? That can make students feel uncomfortable and pressured. It is important for teachers to incorporate open dialogue about the values of interacting with a culturally diverse group of people. People from all cultural backgrounds have an important place in society, and that message needs to be conveyed to students. Not only is it important for teachers to make sure students feel that they are a valued part of the classroom, but it is important to talk about prejudices and discrimination that exist in society. Being open about these topics is important because it can help students develop their own values and learn distinction between cultural differences and cultural discrimination. There are additional steps teachers can take to ensure cultural sensitivity in the classroom. It is important to address any comments that could be considered prejudicial or racist. Students need to understand how hurtful comments can be, even ones that are very subtle. Students who know that negative comments will not be tolerated can feel more comfortable expressing themselves and appreciating their own and others? cultural beliefs. Another thing teachers can do to create a more culturally sensitive classroom is to involve guardians. Teachers can be dealing with a lot of different cultures and languages. Communicating with parents is a great way to get an understanding of students? needs. Another element that teachers can bring to the classroom to improve the cultural sensitivity is to make sure that lesson plans incorporate readings and activities that explore a variety of cultures. Exposing students to a variety of cultures through music, readings, art, pictures, and assignments allows students to develop a sense of cross-cultural awareness. Not only that, but students also have a greater chance to develop an appreciation of being surrounded by diverse cultures. Getting students to interact with one another is also a great way to enhance students? inter-cultural communication skills. Creating a culturally sensitive classroom can be a challenge for teachers, particularly those who are working with students from many different cultures. Teachers have a great opportunity to develop values in their students like being able to appreciate other cultures, being aware of and refuting stereotypes and prejudices. Teachers need to take multiple steps to be aware of the unique values that students bring and help students learn to appreciate each other despite their cultural differences.
